Critics accuse the principle of indifference of extracting information from ignorance.
Interpretations of Probability (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)The paradox arises because the principle of indifference can be used in incompatible ways.
Interpretations of Probability (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)When the spaces are countably infinite, the spirit of the classical theory may be upheld by appealing to the information-theoretic principle of maximum entropy, a generalization of the principle of indifference championed by Jaynes (1968).
Interpretations of Probability (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)This brings us to one of the key objections to Laplace’s account. The notion of “equally possible” cases faces the charge of either being a category mistake (for ‘possibility’ does not come in degrees), or circular (for what is meant is really ‘equally probable’).
Interpretations of Probability (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)some of the leading ‘interpretations of probability’ do not obey all of Kolmogorov’s axioms, yet they have not lost their title for that. And various other quantities that have nothing to do with probability do satisfy Kolmogorov’s axioms, and thus are ‘interpretations’ of it in the strict sense
Interpretations of Probability (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)Crucially, posing such problems to society means that the good guys never have to respond.
SHAME & SOCIETY – @hotelconcierge on TumblrYes, personal advocacy and public activism are nonexclusive in theory: in practice, the latter is a tool to redirect the former
SHAME & SOCIETY – @hotelconcierge on Tumblrnihilism always gets big laughs at parties
SHAME & SOCIETY – @hotelconcierge on TumblrIn the battleground of ideas, positive beliefs are painted targets.
SHAME & SOCIETY – @hotelconcierge on TumblrBoJack pretends at a quarter-life panacea while in fact selling a specific brand of suffering as aspirational—the duty that Girls abandoned when Lena Dunham was outed as a Russian bot—it has to validate the pursuit of social currency.
SHAME & SOCIETY – @hotelconcierge on TumblrThen monoculture arrives. Checkboxes become more granular and the list of permissible narratives shrinks. Everyone sends the same signals so the signals lose meaning.
SHAME & SOCIETY – @hotelconcierge on TumblrBut guess what: the softboy has checked every sorry checkbox of Good Male Ally, and yet remains a manipulative asshole, because there is no checkbox for manipulative asshole, because recognizing manipulative assholes is metis, not episteme.
SHAME & SOCIETY – @hotelconcierge on TumblrThe politicization of everything mirrors the spread of capitalism: in both cases, local resources (wool, opinions about videogames) are exchanged for global currency (euro, opinions about gender).
SHAME & SOCIETY – @hotelconcierge on TumblrMy thesis is that the same checkboxing that has occurred at the macro level is now taking place in the micro: the regulation of the interpersonal for mass appeal.
SHAME & SOCIETY – @hotelconcierge on TumblrAnd if brand is everything and your peers reflect your brand, then fetishizing others is now rewarded. It seems to me that this is the invisible hand behind the cartography of our loneliness.
SHAME & SOCIETY – @hotelconcierge on Tumblrfetishization is subsidized by society. All societies. The bigger the society, the more one has to perform the anthropologically modern task of pleasing a stranger
SHAME & SOCIETY – @hotelconcierge on TumblrCapitalism is to blame only insofar as it has made them more equal, with nothing left to compete over except social currency.
SHAME & SOCIETY – @hotelconcierge on Tumblra decrease in the diversity of opportunities for competition will lead to an increase in competition’s ferocity

Curius / Onboardingwe lose the possibility of a reduction of causal claims to claims that are non-causal. Fortunately (or so §§7 and 8 argue) an interventionist formulation of a manipulability theory may be non-trivial and illuminating even if it fails to be reductive.
Causation and Manipulability (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)take as primitive the notion of manipulation (or some related notion like agency or bringing about an outcome as a result of a free action), to argue that this notion is not itself causal (or at least does not presuppose all of the features of causality the investigator is trying to analyze), and to then attempt to use this notion to construct a non-circular reductive definition
Causation and Manipulability (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)unilluminatingly circular
Causation and Manipulability (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)unacceptably anthropocentric
Causation and Manipulability (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)if C is genuinely a cause of E , then if I can manipulate C in the right way, this should be a way of manipulating or changing E
Causation and Manipulability (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)Cases of what’s been called preemption share a common structure: there is a backup, would-be cause of e (call it “b”, for backup). Had c not happened, the backup b would have been a cause of e, but c preempted b, causing e to happen
The Metaphysics of Causation (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)Principle of Satisficing Categories: Each perceptual category of an or- ganism, to the extent that the category is shaped by natural selection, is a satisficing solution to adaptive problems.
The Interface Theory of PerceptionThe sex dispar- ities between Black men and Black women created such conflicting interests that Black women could not possibly represent Black men adequately.
Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Antiracist PoliticsBecause the promotion of only two Black women into supervisory positions would have achieved the expected mean distribution of Black women within that job category, the court was "unwilling to agree that a prima facie case of disparate impact ha[d] been proven." 2
