The problem is that—much like my fantasy football team—Zillow’s formulaic purchasing strategy virtually guaranteed that it would get the slice of the inventory it had most overrated. Any time there’s a problem with the home not captured in the Zestimate, (but perhaps visible to a slower, more careful buyer), Zillow’s iBuying program was likely to overpay. And the people getting a great deal from Zillow would be those most likely to take the deal. This is a mix of problems that economists call “adverse selection” and “imperfect information,” most famously studied by George Akerlof in the 1970…

There’s a certain irony to insurance that most people don’t think about. But if you really are prepared, and you have a diversified property-casualty insurance business — a lot of property business in it — if you’re really prepared to pay your claims under any circumstances that come along in the next hundred years, you have to have so much capital in the business that it’s not a very good business

Why should we even care about climate change?
parthasarthy.com / Why should we even care about climate change?
Yes, our civilization owns almost 0.8 billion tons of cows, pigs, sheep, camels, etc.; but in the not too distant past animals in wild ecosystems were twice as abundant. These ecosystems were stable, did not fear climate change, and were utilizing only the sun’s energy.
Sergey Zimov's Manifesto
Fifteen thousand years ago, pasture ecosystems were at the peak of their evolution. They occupied most of our planet. Forests at that time were preserved only in places with poor stony or sandy soils. Even in the Amazon, only few islands of forest were left. At the time, the biomass of big herbivores on the planet reached 1.6 billion tons.

Of the order of 1 million tons of such resonant-type scattering material are estimated to suffice to remove 1% of the total insolation of the Earth; the corresponding cost may be $0.3- 0.75 billion/year.

And the basic problem is that in the case of climate, very small structures, like clouds, dominate. And you cannot model them in any realistic way. They are far too small and too diverse.

If you're doing something every day, commit to an amount that you can do every day. The easiest way to do that is to make sure that you're committing to doing something that can scale up and down depending on your bandwidth. For example, don't commit to practice piano for 2 hours a day. Some days, that'll be impossible. Commit to practicing piano for at least 15 minutes a day. That's doable every day, no matter what. No one says you have to stop when you get to 15 minutes. On most days, you'll practice much more than that, because any activity has inertia once you start. But on your worst day,…
