加州柏克萊大學建築系的教授Marc Treib在〈景觀一定要有意義嗎？〉(“Must Landscape Mean?”)[i]一文中定義了「場所精神」 (Genius Loci) 的幾項特質，包括了應突顯其地方性格、不應過度壓抑、大地和氣候不影響其展現、當地居民的需求（包含心理上的）應該優先考量、並且符合所謂的時代精神，因此當代的藝術元素於此可以被挪用、拼貼甚至解構於景觀設計之中。本文以Treib的場所精神作為基本論述，試圖與維吉尼亞大學景觀設計系教授Elizabeth Meyer所著〈The Expanded Field of Landscape Architecture〉[ii]中的女性觀點進行對話。
