EF: One of the areas you look at in your new book, Talent, is talent-spotting. In your own case, you started as an undergraduate at Rutgers-Newark, then transferred to George Mason University at a time when it didn't have the stature it does today — and a few years later, you were a doctoral student in Harvard's economics department. What happened? How were you spotted? Cowen: I spent my three years at George Mason trying to publish articles in refereed journals, which I managed to do with a few pieces.
