one of my favorite games is the beginner's guide. made by the creator of iconic metanarrative the stanley parable, the game starts with narration by a fictionalized version of its actual creator, davey wreden, touring you through a series of unfinished games made by a friend named coda. instead of games with, you know, win conditions, they're more like surreal walking simulators. in fact, davey will near-immediately spoil the non-obvious puzzles you encounter. yet, it uses narrative in a way that breaks and makes you reconsider your understanding of its world and characters. i recommend it a lot, especially as someone who is of two wolves (read: internally inconsistent) when it comes to why i make art (and just loves a good metafiction). screenshot from the beginner's guide when i tell people i like games, they're sometimes surprised i don't mean triple-a titles or first-person shooters or fortnite. rather, i enjoy puzzles. i grew up on point-and-click escape rooms where you needed to
