Introducing the Weathering Potential Explorer: A Global Screening Tool for Enhanced Rock Weathering Potential
Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is an emerging carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategy that accelerates the natural breakdown of alkaline rocks and minerals to capture and store atmospheric CO₂. While ERW builds on farmers' centuries-old practice of applying ground rock to improve soil pH and fertility, it's optimized specifically for carbon removal. We know ERW works, but we need better tools to understand where environmental conditions—particularly temperature, soil moisture, and pH—create the highest potential for rapid rock dissolution. That's why we built the Weathering Potential Explorer, an interactive global map that can support successful ERW deployments by pinpointing regions where relative environmental conditions could favor rapid silicate weathering. The following PDF is a practical guide to using the Weathering Potential Explorer. It explains what each button does, how to navigate the map, and what the different layers and filters will show. It also includes walkthroughs for
