Earlier this week, The Free Press published a tiresome little piece of techno-utopian cheerleading by Noah Smith, a well-known techno-utopian cheerleader. Of course, the piece was called “The Return of the Luddites.” Like all evangelists of unrestrained progress, Smith uses the term Luddite as an epithet. Essentially, the Luddite is cast as a sort of imbecile who opposes all technology for no particular reason other than sheer hatred of it.
