FTX logic in the age of AI hype
Contra my optimistic declarations of a few weeks ago, I concede that there are worlds where Effective Altruism does not recapture and surpass its past glory. Most of those worlds are ones where AI becomes a much less big deal in the world, or, more conservatively, fails to show signs of radically transforming the world in the next five years. EAs are writing bigger and bigger reputational checks here that reality might not cash. If those checks bounce, I worry EAs will struggle to recover the minimal social capital they need to make good things happen in the world generally. The backdrop…
