Chapter 3 Illustrating Causal Models | Integrated Inferences: Causal Models for Qualitative and Mixed-Method Research

We use three arguments from published political science research to illustrate how to represent theoretical ideas as structural causal models. We illustrate using Paul Pierson’s (1994) work on welfare state retrenchment, Elizabeth Saunders’ (2011) research on military intervention strategies, and Adam Przeworski and Fernando Limongi’s (1997) study of the relationship between national wealth and democracy. In this short chapter, we illustrate how we can encode prior knowledge in a causal model by asking how we might construct models in light of extant scholarly works.
