Let’s get this out of the way–I’m sure there are other more interesting things to compare-contrast about the two works and I’m sure enough English major blood has been spilt on them already. I’m going somewhere else with this, somewhere I’m mildly qualified to venture. Infinite Jest has sections of endnotes longer than other independent novels 1 . They are not peripheral, they are structural–load-bearing notes 2 .
