The globalization of news has made the whole world’s problems our problem, fostering a sense of powerlessness that’s led many to redefine morality from “doing good” to merely “feeling bad”. C. S. Lewis noted this in his 1946 letter to Bede Griffiths: It’s creating a dangerous climate in which it is almost taboo to express fulfillment, happiness, optimism etc. Also amazing the number of people obsessed with issues half a world away that they can’t possibly hope to affect while doing nothing to help desperate people in their own community. What a prescient quote, always very grounding and affirming to realize that someone made the same observations about humanity many years ago that a few of us are recognizing now I was struck by your phrase ‘redefine morality from “doing good” to merely “feeling bad”’.
