What is the appeal of Vtubers over regular streamers? : r/VirtualYoutubers

I fell down the Vtuber rabbit hole in earnest after the Hololive event with Azur Lane and have since been watching translated clips of Vtubers more than I watch anything else on Youtube. I've tried watching LPs of Vtubers, but I can't get into them simply due to the language barrier; however, I tend to find them more entertaining than normal streamers in spite of that, and I have no idea why. I think it goes beyond "cute anime avatar" but it's really hard to say for certain if that's what it is. I'm trying to make sense of it all, since I would find normal streams to be very boring for the most part...but not Vtubers. Since I can't really find an answer myself, I figure it's best to ask this community: what's the appeal? Why do Vtubers seem to be more entertaining to watch than your garden variety streamer?
