Notes on consciousness and sleep

Sleep teaches us a few things about consciousness. One, it’s possible to be unconscious and alive. Sometimes when we wake up, we know we weren’t conscious a moment ago and are conscious now. Two, it’s possible to be conscious but disconnected from the world. In dreams, we often aren’t aware of the external world at all, but we’re undoubtedly “conscious” in the sense of having an experience.
