Cate Hall’s You Can Just Do Things: How High-Agency People Get What They Want Out of Life sounds like a book designed to tell me what I want to hear. I’ve long believed in: Literal free will. It is metaphysically possible for people to do more than one thing, holding constant the state of the universe. I am well aware of all the incredulity this engenders, but I observe my free will via introspection in every waking moment, and if you can dismiss my constant observation with “That’s just an illusion,” you could just as easily dismiss all observation as illusion.
