In politics, the ‘Overton window ‘ is the range of positions that can safely raise their heads in public discourse. Propose something outside the window and you can expect resistance—not just to the proposal itself, but to the idea that you even merit a place in the debate, after saying what you just said. Science too has Overton windows. Sometimes positions can be so far outside the mainstream, they invite the charge that we should not even be discussing this .
