Founded on 28 July 1957, the Situationists were formed from three small groups, the Lettrist International, the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus and the London Psychogeographical Association (Pinder 1994). This artistic and political movement, which came to an end in 1972, was comprised of artists and writers. Through their techniques of dérive and détournement, they created maps made up of pieces from newspapers, books and other findings and tried to display formerly hidden aspects of the city (Youtube 2007). Dérive consisted of wandering through the city and being either drawn to or turned off particular attractions. Such attractions included the cities buildings, streets and ambiance, which allowed the Situationists to see the city of Paris in a new way and discover aspects that they hated.
