On 22nd November 2024, as we drove through Sangti Valley, in the Eastern Himalayan foothills of Arunachal Pradesh, our car was filled with excitement and palpable tension. My co-travellers were frantically worrying about something alien to the landscape and the home of the Monpas - believed to be the only nomadic tribe in Northeast India. About 7000 feet above sea level, the black-necked crane had migrated from Tibet, into the calmer parts of the swift-moving Dirang River, which flows through Sangti Valley.
