This week on Possible, Aria Finger and I discussed the future of education and how, “everyone is cheating their way through college with AI.” The New York Magazine headline made me pause: if large-language models can crank out passable work products in seconds, what does college look like when raw intelligence is abundant? First reaction: paradoxically, college may get harder. It’s never been easier to cheat with AI––but that will quickly change. When ChatGPT writes the five-paragraph, compare-and-contrast essay in seconds, faculty must leapfrog to assessments that AI can’t ace on autopilot. Probably verbal assessments, socratic seminars, live white-boarding, etc. These formats are not only hard to cheat on, but they’re harder to study for. Second, assignments will invert. Instead of “Write a fresh essay on Plato,” professors will hand out a bundle of AI-generated drafts, each with logical gaps or statistical slip-ups.
