Today marks the 54th anniversary of the publication of an essay that changed my life. The reverberations of that event still echo in my life. The culture that produced them remains alive and well.
There’s a story I return to in my writing, and in my brain, more often than I’d like. It’s not the most important story in my life, or anything close. But it’s one that defined me in the eyes of many people for a few decades of my life and still does, in some quarters. More than that, it’s a story that haunted me for a very long time. And though I am free of that now, I can’t pretend it didn’t alter, irrevocably, the path of my life.
