Harnessing fusion here on Earth could provide limitless, clean, on-demand power to drive prosperity around the world. But for fusion power to be commercially viable, we need an approach that combines established science, practical engineering, and affordable manufacturing. One compelling approach has been known for decades. It’s called pulsed magnetic inertial fusion. Pulsed magnetic means a fuel container is rapidly squeezed by a powerful magnetic field created by driving a large, fast-rising electrical current across it. This compression heats and inertially confines the fuel, fusing hydrogen into helium to release massive energy. The process is repeated over and over, like in a piston engine. But there hasn’t been a clear path to use this approach for commercial fusion energy. Until now.
