I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and affiliated faculty with the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation at UC Berkeley. I am the director of the Cognition and Computation in Design (Co-Design) Lab at UC Berkeley. My research group is part of the Berkeley Institute of Design. My research group works primarily in the area of Design Theory and Methodology. We are interested in understanding how humans and computers design, and we use that information to improve the design process. We use a variety of research techniques such as Neuroimaging (fMRI), computational modeling, and human-subject studies. Some of our goals are to develop: 1) theories that describe how individuals and teams engage in the process of design 2) models that predict/learn user responses to designed artifacts at both micro and macro levels 3) tools that enhance the natural capabilities of designers through combined human-computer synthesis Prior to UC Berkeley, I was a Postdoctora
