They’re also increasingly crowded, complicated and, at times, strained by the very popularity that makes them so essential to travel in the US. Despite wildfire closures, staffing shortages and other operational disruptions, the US National Park Service reported 323 million recreation visits on its lands in 2025, with 26 sites setting visitation records. They offer a clear antidote to the digital world and a
