I posted this meme on teasing that my next essay would be about Frankenstein and I was met with a couple of comments that this is a “reach” or an exaggeration when I suggested the story was about being a woman. To me, this was a surprising response—because, how could it not be a story about womanhood? Of course Mary Shelley is influenced by her own life experiences of womanhood. The lens through which Shelley sees the world, and the way she has been shaped as a writer is entirely defined by her experience of being a woman.
