Mario Draghi Mario Draghi is an Italian economist who served as President of the European Central Bank from 2011 to 2019 and as Prime Minister of Italy from 2021 to 2022. His famous 2012 pledge to do 'whatever it takes' to preserve the euro was decisive in stabilising the currency and bringing the European sovereign debt crisis to an end. In 2024, at the request of the European Commission, he published "The future of European competitiveness", a detailed blueprint for reversing Europe's economic decline that has become the main reference in EU competitiveness debates.
