Edward Tufte’s 6 Data Visualization Principles | by Yahia zakaria | Medium
Edward Tufte, often called the “Leonardo da Vinci of data,” changed the way we see and understand information. His principles for data visualization are more than just guidelines, they’re timeless tools for turning raw data into clear, meaningful insights. In this article, I’ll break down Tufte’s six key principles, explaining each one with examples. The representation of numbers, as measured on the surface of a graph, should be directly proportional to the numerical quantities represented. Simply put, the visual size of elements should match the data they represent. Misleading visuals, like inflating the size of bars or pie slices without proper scaling, distort the story the data is trying to tell. Consider these two graphics showing fuel economy standards for autos from 1978 to 1985: The first graphic uses a perspective “road” design that dramatically stretches the lines representing miles per gallon (mpg) over time. For example, the line for 18 mpg in 1978 is just 0.6 inches long,
