Notes on learning as compression — flow state, semantic networks, and building understanding that sticks.
Learning is compression of high-dimensional information into lower-dimensional representations which you understand. These representations are captured into your semantic network, connecting with previously learned concepts. To learn optimally, you must find the right state of mind. For me, this is finding a flow state. I find this flow state consistently by organising one-hour+ blocks of time for narrow focus, with short breaks in between. Listening to consistent repetitive beats helps put my mind into this state. To retain information, you must revisit it, at consistent spaced intervals…
