Muni vehicles have automatic passenger counters and publish broad live occupancy categories: empty, many seats available, few seats available or standing room only. This site combines those categories with vehicle and train-car capacities to estimate current ridership. I checked many buses in-person to refine the estimations and spot check the numbers. The headline estimates riders aboard every active bus and modern light-rail train with reported occupancy. Cable cars and historic streetcars are excluded because their feed values do not reflect live passenger loads. The live feed does not provide exact passenger counts.
