Sage Research Methods - Designing Social Research: A Guide for the Bewildered
This chapter introduces the key concepts that students need to know in order to be able to begin to think about and discuss social research. First, we will work through some basic terms such as the difference between primary and secondary data, before considering some more philosophical terms. Next, some practical examples of how these concepts can be applied will be given to show that research methods vary considerably in terms of the way they use data, and on their philosophical bases. Finally, the chapter will argue that what is important is that students and researchers understand what I'll call a ‘logic of appropriateness’ in their work – that no methods are intrinsically better than others, but that the choice of methods is important because some methods suit particular kinds of problems better than others. Being aware of the relationship between method and the problem at hand is therefore extremely important in conducting social research – the central theme of this book. Nobody
