A Good Career is an Expression of Love

There are two ways of thinking about a career path: the object level and the meta level. The object level represents what you will do. For example, if you’re applying to grad school, the object level is exactly what research you want to do— it isn’t “Theory of Computation”, it’s “I will find out if every 3D Turmite resolves into a highway.” While these types of ambitions seem obviously necessary to me for anyone who wants a good career, they remain surprisingly uncommon.1 Much more common is the meta level: “I want to work at Google”, or “I want to make six figures.” These focus on the…
