What happened?

He doesn't reach an intelligible conclusion. I think the explanation is simple. The fault is with the politics and the impoverished tastes of the institutions and industry that foster fiction. It's never been an industry that attracted people who did it for the money. The people now in charge see the world in a binary, over-simplified way and want parables that hit you over the head with sentimentality, recurring woke themes, and are told in dumbed down language.
