Last Sunday, I decided to go on an early morning run. My old swim coach used to tell me that pain is a privilege - it’s a unique gift to be able to challenge your mental and physical fortitude consistently and a capacity not everyone is blessed to have. It’s a special privilege to be up at 5, when the rest of the city sleeps and you can truly be alone. My daily route is generally the same one I’ve been running with my friend Josh since I started running in Austin over the summer. West Street to Ladybird Lake to South Congress. I know the route like the back of my hand, and despite the trail being pitch black in the wee hours of the morning, I know where every turn, divot, and homeless encampment is.
