A ghost protocol is a pattern of interactions between two parties wherein one party pretends the other does not exist. A simple example is the "silent treatment" pattern we all learn as kids. In highly entangled family life, the silent treatment is not possible to sustain for very long, but in looser friendship circles, it is both practical and useful to be able to ghost people indefinitely.
