Preface and Thanks This book is largely based upon my writings in Japan for the last two and a half years. Part of it has appeared in the Communications of the ACM and the EDU COM Review, and the proceedings of World-Wide Computing and Its Applications ’97, Tsukuba, Japan. Some of it appeared much earlier in DATAMATION. About this different style of writing: my previous writings have been in a style that was for speakers of very sophisticated English, playing with the meanings of unusual words.
