Acute respiratory distress syndrome: Ventilator management strategies for adults INTRODUCTION Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a form of lung injury that is associated with a high mortality. Mechanical ventilation and supportive therapies are the mainstays of treatment. The ventilator strategies used to treat ARDS are reviewed here. In general, these recommendations are in keeping with those issued by several society guideline groups [1-5].
