This Week’s $70 Grocery Plan (For 2): Corn Girl Summer
One of my favorite summer memories from my childhood is walking across the street from my house to a seasonal farm stand. It was the only time my picky-eater self would venture to try new food, probably fueled by wanting to appear cooler and more cultured than I was. I remember enjoying a peach for the first time in the driveway after walking home from the stand, its juice dripping everywhere, much less sexy than the TSITP episode made it look. That farm stand was also where I remember buying a huge bag of corn on the cob and lugging it home, not realizing the long task ahead to peel it and pull off all the silk hairs. But the effort was worth it once I tasted those buttery, grilled corn on the cob my mom made later that day. I was inspired by this memory as I lugged 15 ears of corn home from Union Square Greenmarket last week. To stick to this budget, I intentionally overlap grocery items across meals, practice repetition with variation, and avoiding pre-made packaged goods.
