You’ve hit on the question that truly divides Londoners. I live in north London so you’ll have to read my answer with that prejudice in mind *East London* Has undergone and is still in the process of massive change. Maybe 30 years ago it was seen as the place you lived because it was cheap and not particularly interesting. Then artists and small niche businesses set up in places like Shoreditch, Old Street and Hackney and it began to take off. Younger people moved to east London attracted by the (for London) reasonably priced homes, and businesses and entertainment opened to cater to their needs. This is actually happening right now in areas like Dalston. Gentrification followed and more and more of the east is now eye wateringly expensive. There are exceptions. Places like Canning Town and Barking are just barely affordable though not for much longer. The exception to this is Docklands. It may be in east London but is certainly isn’t part of it.
