Prestige Trap

Author’s background: Went to a public university in Georgia, have been around many interesting places though. Overall these days, I’m unimpressed by false prestige and appearances and more interested in real knowledge and competence. I look at items, people, places, and break them down into component parts to understand them, so I find it harder and harder to be surprised as I get older. At a get-together near Harvard, a girl from UConn was surprised that I came up from Georgia to visit for a while. From this, I’d surmise that she came to Boston to visit the guy at Harvard (he was at the same get-together) due to the Prestige Trap (aka the incorrectly attributed halo effect due to schooling, company, or appearances), where she thought she was lucky to get a guy like that. She wouldn’t have said that if she ran in the Bos/NYC/SF highly mobile circles.
