It is one of the top five causes of maternal mortality in both resource-abundant and resource-limited countries, although the absolute risk of death from PPH is much lower in the former. Timely recognition, availability of appropriate resources, and appropriate response are critical for preventing death and severe maternal morbidity. To ensure an appropriate response, provider and institutional planning and preparation are essential. This topic will present an overview of major issues relating to PPH. Clinical use of specific medical and minimally invasive interventions, and surgical interventions at laparotomy, for management of PPH are discussed separately.
