The “Incomplete Manifesto for Growth” was written in 1998. It was my first attempt to answer the question: How does one sustain a creative life? My wife’s sister was producing a small magazine in Toronto, and she invited me to contribute. I was doing my best to procrastinate, but she would not let up. Finally, I realized that there was something I had been thinking about that might be worth writing down. I had just completed the first “season” of my work, and I was enjoying an international reputation as an innovative designer. The architect Frank Gehry—who was a real mentor for me, not only as a designer but also as a person—had pulled me aside to say, “Bruce, very few people I know have survived what is happening to you [i.e. my level of success] at your age. Focus on the work, not the fame. The work doesn’t care about you. You’re not famous in the work.” It started me thinking about what it would take to go beyond the flash-in-the-pan of early success and sustain a lifelong practice
