I love repeating numbers, from 11:11 to binary code, I am always thinking about the meaning behind what appears to be mundane. This usually leads down a few fun rabbit holes, one of which began as I was teaching Professor Anna Everett’s essay “The Revolution Will Be Digitized: Afrocentricity and the Digital Public Sphere”, in which Everett discusses the hidden Hegelian dialectic programmed into her computer’s operating system (“Pri. Master Disk, Pri. Slave Disk, Sec. Master, Sec. Slave.’”) which also speaks to the digital legacy of slavery in computational systems. And, after teaching for a few weeks on surveillance, speculation, and the mysterious back-story of The Matrix, I have been thinking quite a bit about Hegel’s “The Phenomenology of Spirit” and the difference between epistemology and existentialism by deconstructing what we know to be true, and what we believe to be true in society.
