If you’re paying attention, beauty exists all around us. It’s in the groove of a rock, the chords of a song, and the brilliance within a smile. Activists, in many respects, are people who simply have observed beauty in the world and want to preserve and share that beauty they’ve found with others. For Janet MacGillivray, she saw beauty in the rich Lakota culture, history, and land that exists on The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. In fact, the Lakota people are one of the first indigenous communities who lived in North America just before European settlers. Their story is a story of resilience: they resisted the forces of colonization and marginalization through Red Cloud’s War, The Great Sioux War, and even Standing Rock.
