OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – Consumers Energy plans to decommission its last coal-fired power plant next year, but a new group wants Ottawa County to buy the plant and keep it in operation. The “Save the Campbell” plan proposed by Citizens Consulting Group calls for a multi-election process that organizers claim would allow Ottawa County to purchase the J.H. Campbell plant either through negotiation or by force of law. The county would then create an independent, member-owned electric cooperative, transfer the plant to the co-op and have the co-op sell the power generated by J.H. Campbell to every Ottawa County household currently served by Consumers Energy. Located on a 2,000-acre plot of land off Pigeon Lake in Port Sheldon Township, the 1,440 megawatts of power generated by J.H. Campbell is enough to meet the electric needs of a million people.
