newbie question about covering conference : Journalism

So I'm a student journalist and I have to cover a story on my beat which is the environment. Now, I found on social media an annual conference in town right on that topic. But it's SUPER expensive to attend and I was thinking to ask for a media pass. Now here is my stupid question: if by any luck they let me in for free to cover the event and I end up not to (because it's way over my head) or for some other reason, something happens? I feel bad to have a chance to get in for free as a journalist but then not cover it to the best of my abilities. Idk, I'm kind of worried for any bad consequences. (It's not an assigned story from school , I'm just thinking of doing it as a potential story to submit for school) Edit - you are all beautiful human beings. Thank you so much for the help!
