When I started in the venture business more than a decade ago, it was a competitive advantage to be well read and a student of technology and business strategy. A basic understanding of businesses, markets, moats, margins, and perhaps even an MBA) put you ahead of the pack. If you were one of the few that simply had read “Technological Revolutions and Financial Capital” or “7 Powers” and knew how to reasonably apply the lessons (as USV and IA Ventures did), you had an edge. Today, being smart or well read is not nearly enough. Every venture capitalist reads the same books, the same blog posts, listens to the same podcasts, has the same AI tools, and for the most part applies the same heuristics to markets, technologies, and founders. Most VCs are even smart enough to explain the bull and bear case behind their decisions.
