Confidence, self-awareness, and sense of self-worth. I’m not saying sobriety is all pink clouds and rainbows. I’m not saying anyone else’s sobriety will look anything like mine. But for me, deciding to not drink alcohol anymore changed everything. For me, it was the most powerful, transformative choice of my life. But know what? Know what my immediate experience was after I quit and when night rolled around? Dread. Deep, in-the-bones dread. My drink of choice was red wine and I only had it at dinner. But goddammit. Take that away, and I was terrified. For the first time, I realized just how dependant I was on “wine with dinner” to counter anxiety—specifically, the sort that comes on after dark and traces back to my childhood.
