As someone still in the early stages of my career (I have only been in the workforce for 4 years), but who has already worked in 3 different roles across 3 different industries - 1 year in Investment Banking, 2 years in Consulting, and the most recent year in Big Tech - I feel uniquely qualified to write about the experience of being “young and inexperienced” at work. Here’s what I’ve learned. Anybody who starts a new job will encounter an initial period of “growing pains” where you’re unfamiliar with a new environment, its inhabitants, rules and expectations, both explicit and implicit. The “newness” of your job can last anywhere from a few months to over a year, and this depends on a variety of factors like whether you’re going from a small to a large organization, switching to a similar company within the same industry, or changing your career path completely (e.g., MBA career switchers or people like yours truly).
