Human trafficking, defined as the application of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labour or commercial sex act, is not a new problem in Cambodia, however, this issue appeared to be underscored recently after the Kingdom was internationally lambasted for its inability to combat the crime. In July, the US downgraded Cambodia  from Tier 2 to Tier 3 in its 2022 Trafficking in Persons Report, thus placing the Kingdom on the black list and hence subject to US sanctions, although the administration routinely waives punishment for friendly nations that promise improvements.
