Love in the time of Linklater - by Keane Moraes
Reading Love in the Time of Cholera has made me question everything I know about the nature of love and the evolution of desire. This post is my effort to come to terms with it and use some of the best stories I know as a guiding star. Soooo….. I’ve borrowed a little help from The Before Trilogy. The Before Trilogy is 3 movies - Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, which are expressions of love through 3 decades, your 20s, your 30s and your 40s respectively. More importantly, they deal with the specific nature of the love you find in these three decades and use conversation as the tool for exposition. In this essay, I try to outline the progression of love and the litmus tests inherent in knowing when someone is worth committing to. With that being said, herein lies my poor lover’s observations on the nature of love, loss and limerence. The Before Trilogy is the bedrock for this essay, and to me, each of the movies captures its respective tiers of the Pyramid. My friend P
