For Ludwig Wittgenstein, the war ended in November 1918 when the decrepit Austro-Hungarian empire disintegrated. After serving with courage and distinction for over four years, he was taken prisoner and spent the next nine months in relatively mild Italian captivity. The war had been brutal for the Wittgenstein family. His brother Paul lost an arm and suffered through the misery of internment at a Russian POW camp in Siberia.
