I have read my fifth Haruki Murakami book and I am almost going to promise myself that I wouldn’t read another of his, not in the next few months or year anyway. I have read Norwegian Wood (LOVED), Sputnik Sweetheart (Still not too bad), Colourless Tsukuru (Bored), The Strange Library (pointless) and my last, The Elephant Vanishes (meh). The only reason why I read this was the anticipation of reading beautifully crafted short stories but I absolutely did not foresee myself getting irritated with some of them. I’m not saying all of the stories were bad; they were just not what I was looking for in a short story. I think most Murakami fans would understand his style — a late twenties to mid thirties Japanese male (sometimes female) that drinks or smokes a lot, loner, or has a wife and kids but feels detached because of some emotional baggage, has a penchant for classical music or some old tune, loves sex or doesn’t love it but has it anyway etcetera.
